I will be travelling from Brussels to London on 22 June and I want to book my travel now. Eurostar would have been my preference but can anyone enlighten me on whether this might be affected by the strikes going on in France at the moment? Would you recommend that I fly instead?

Bath VIP – the Belgian rail unions are also striking (today Tuesday) and Eurostar is affected. It’s too early to say if the dispute will last until June 22 but it’s worth knowing that the French and Belgian trade unions are now co-ordinating their actions for maximum effect.

If I book the train and it is cancelled due to strikes, do Eurostar have a good history in paying refunds?

According to the website no Eurostar services are affected today.

Probably difficult to predict what may or may not happen in 3 weeks time though.

Just seen this on the Eurostar website so it appears that a straight refund would be given.

I’m contemplating making an Avios booking from Brussels as a backup.

The London Brussels service seems to be unaffected so far however Brussels – Lille is cancelled and onward travel from Brussels via the Belgian network is very chaotic.

One of the Belgian union leaders was on lunchtime TV saying their intention was to,
“Drive this government into the past” Sometimes living here is like the UK in the 1970’s before Margaret Thatcher with Union leaders who are happy to ignore the democratic process if it results in governments they do not agree with. At present most of the action is centred in the French speaking region as the Dutch speaking trade unions are still in discussions however this may change. Later today it is expected that major roads will be blocked by farmers and truck drivers.
