I have been flying business Ethiopian from Bangkok to Addis Ababa and onwards to Harare and return; planes were rather antiquated, with old-style seats, a very basic entertainment system and food which would have been excellent in economy.

The major advantage for this selection was the price, and therefore I will not complain too much. What I do not appreciate however is the way how ET ignores letters and mails: I got Star Alliance mileage for 3 legs out of four; I complained to the Thai Royal Orchid program, to which I belong, but they referred me to ET; I then wrote and emailed ET several times, but got no reply. I contacted Star Alliance, but they referred me back to Thai. For my next trip to Africa, I certainly will choose another airline.

I’ve flown Cloud Nine a few times in recent weeks – B772, B787, B752 and B738. Interestingly the seats are better on the 772 than the 787 – they have a stool at the bottom (bit like BA) and using this the bed basically goes totally flat. The 787 is angle lie flat and I don’t find the seat (“bed”) is long enough (and I’m only 181cm). 752 is a tired aircraft and kind of half way between a short all seat and a long haul seat.
Services is variable – I don’t think their Cabin Crew training is very comprehensive (like say BA). And on a night flight they are always making a lot of noise gossiping in the galley.
And the music they play during landing and taxi is annoying!
Lounge in Bola is not great, but ok. It’s an easy airport to transit through.
The United Lounge in LHR T2 (which you use if flying Ethiopian ex-LHR) is very nice – fully staffed bar, good food.
Price is the main reason for flying them (and Star Alliance membership)
