i’m hearing rumours that things are not so good getting through security at Edinburgh recently (lengthy delays) – anyone know anything about this?

It’s just been announced in the Edinburgh News that the airport’s security chief has resigned following months of problems with the new security processes.

I fly through Edinburgh most weeks. The difficulty appears to me to be the fact that the new streamlined security lanes all depend on passengers knowing what to do and when to do it. Given there are typically only two lanes open it only needs one passengers to hold things up. This gives rise to further pressure of leisure passengers being put under pressure by staff in a way that did not happen before. The design of the hall needs looked at again I think. Strikes me the mistake has not been dealing with the problem quickly enough since it came to light.

    Edinburgh Airport………Aghhhhhh !!!!
A plea………Please oh please bring back BAA or at least the airport I once loved travelling through………

My recent experiences have left me feeling very jaded, very jaded indeed!!
And if I wanted to have a Sarah Connor versus Skynet experience I’d by tickets to see Arnie in my local Odeon.

This is my EDI Terminalator story!

A relative quiet Saturday night, and on arrival into the departures lounge, I’m faced with “The Rise of the Machines” ….. A simple bag drop off is now replaced with a column of contraptions, rising like mechanical soldiers from the space, where once people interacted with other people.
Ironically I still needed help from a human, as my machine decided to display digital gibberish, rather than 3 simple letters..….DUB !!

Finally, upstairs I proceed, to the screening complex. A process so void of an interpersonal experience, one feels that “Judgement Day” has arrived. Finally escaping the complex, EDI Terminalator takes further control of your ability have free thought……

Forcing you to now to walk through the Duty Free shop (The Old Security Area) , the Terminalator has now completely annihilated my choice not to shop, as their human slaves summon you with enticing samples of whisky, shortbread , corrupting your independence of thought !!!!

My Terminal Salvation finally arrives, in the form of “A Flying Harp “…. A saviour indeed!!

And all to do it again on Monday morning………..

Much like the range of views on Stansted (see earlier thread Stansted – not fit for purpose) I find similar mismanagement unfolding at the once serene and efficient Edinburgh. They do have a good tram to the airport now though (but remember that it takes 45 mins from Princes St).

But why oh why have the rerouted departing security at the far end of the terminal inconveniently accessed through the food outlet area? Once through security you meander down charmless corridors with temporary walls and floors.

The relocation is probably to allow more shops to be opened and more yards through half built plywood lined corridors to be walked by passengers.

It is a shame because once through the airside is still quite a good experience with plenty of seats and windows with natural light.

I go through Edinburgh most weeks and have done so for over 20 years and I have to say that for me at least the last few weeks have been fine in terms of the speed of the security team. It’s been a few minutes on each occasion which IMO is fine. The new trek through the duty free shopping is ridiculous though and the fact that there doesn’t seem any way of short cutting this is somewhat frustrating. That said, it took me an hour to get through fast track security and passport control at Schiphol yesterday and for a while they closed security because the queue at passport control was backing up so far (departures into lounge 3 flying with BA). Made me think that Edinburgh isn’t that bad at all.

Edinburgh airport was acquired by US fund GIP in 2012.

GIP announced last night it was selling another airport it owns: London City.

According to Alastair Dalton of The Scotsman, GIP says “The sale of London City Airport has no bearing at all on GIP’s on going commitment to Edinburgh Airport.”
