Ebola… are we worried

An article was recently published here on some of the legal issues surrounding Ebola.

What are the forum’s views on Ebola and air travel? Are we worried? Frustrated at the thought of delays and long queues? Not concerned at all?

I’m not at all worried that I will catch Ebola.

Many years ago I read an article by a doctor in the NY Times or somewhere – made sense – he said people are scared of what will probably not kill them (bird flu, air crashes) but not scared of what is statistically far more likely to kill them (heart attacks, cancer). The doctor also pointed out we can take steps to reduce the chances of dying of the latter category, and that our fears were misplaced.

I’m just quoting an article. Many sympathies and condolences to the victims of Ebola and their families.

I am certainly not worried today… but if the number of cases increases exponentially and across the continents as being predicted, I would begin to be concerned.

Key is whether a vaccine is found / created…

Haven’t given it a second thought. A classic example of how humans are really bad at determining risk. The most likely threat to a person on an flight remains the car journey to the airport.

A area of research that needs a lot more funding. I was born in Africa and there among the poor malaria remains a constant and real threat to life.
