Interesting news, a KERS (F1) type system to power an aeroplane for ground movements?

how heavy is the system? how does it affect inflight fuel burn?

    The answer is

“Around 150 Kgs” Easyjet thinks it would not increase the fuel burn dramatically. It would cost about $2 per hour of flight at today’s prices.

    It also says
“Although we save 50 tons of fuel it will cost us just about the same amount to generate the hydrogen so this is not a cost saving measure but an Eco friendly initiative saving 150k tons of Co2 and other gases being emitted.”

    Mmmmm……

Hydrogen and flying machines has not traditionally been a happy combo!

Yes, I was speaking with Ian Davies (HEad of Engineering at Easyjet) and we chatted about that (the Hindenburg etc…).

He mentioned various technologies that help keep it safe, and it could always be jettisoned in an emergency….

an excellent idea that should become standard across all players

but there must be a cost-saving element for someone, perhaps the airport operator (in that they need less push-back lorries, diesel, tryes & drivers, this also saves emissions with the reduction of belched diesel fumes)

Who cares about saving fuel at $30 a barrel?!

I think there’s a hope that the cost of generating the hydrogen will fall as the technology improves.

I wonder what happened to Branson and his starting grids and planes flying on chip fat.

No doubt went the same away as his 4 engines 4 long haul guff.
