ESTA – only valid for 7 weeks?

SwindonericParticipantOn July 7th I applied for ESTA authorization for Mrs Swindoneric and myself. A couple of days ago I had an email telling me that the ESTAs expire on September 3rd. I thought that they were valid for 2 years. We’re actually travelling out on September 2nd so I believe we would get in but I wondered if anyone could shed any light on this? We may want to travel again in February. Would we need new ESTAs? Is there a risk we wouldn’t be admitted to the US if the ESTA expires the day after we are scheduled to arrive? Any thoughts on how I can query this? Feedback would be very much appreciated.

peter19ParticipantYou are correct should be valid for 2 years i suspect there has been a mistake. You can do multiple entries on it over that time.
its all automated but I think you can edit some of the details online? I’m sure you could contact them for an amendment or maybe reapplying is easier which I had to do when i got a new new passport during my 2 year period.Have you done one previously and its the old one that’s expiring..or I presume one of your passports is not about to expire and they have matched that date?

SwindonericParticipantThanks Peter19. My passport is brand new, my wife’s has about 5 years left and has an expired ESTA. All very strange. I’ll try the US consulate in Edinburgh for a start… Thanks for feeding back.

peter19ParticipantJust reading online and it advises once submitted you can only amend the email address and the US address. Any other amendment once the form has been submitted (paid for) you cannot make any changes.
The only the option would be to reapply and submit a new application.11 Aug 2015

SwindonericParticipantI’ve just had a good thrashing from my wife who cleverly spotted that when entering my passport expiry date on the ESTA application form, I entered 3 Sept 2015 rather than 3 Sept 2025. A simple but critical mistake. Clearly the challenges of organising foreign travel are too complex for some of us…
