Just announced there will now be a charge to exit any of the Dubai airports.

    http://whatson.ae/dubai/2016/03/you-now-have-to-pay-a-fee-every-time-you-fly-out-of-a-dubai-airport/

Doesn’t apply for transfer passengers and the fee will be charged at ticket issue and passed along by airlines. The fee is pretty small about £6.50 GBP so i doubt it will bother many people considering it was voted one of the the best holiday destinations to go in the world.

peter19 – Thanks for posting. There’s some confusion here as I’ve read that transit passengers are also charged the new DXB fee in addition to departing passengers.

By “transit” I’m referring to a passenger who might be flying LHR-DXB-BOM or LHR-DXB-SIN. Normally in international aviation, transit passengers either pay no fee or pay a reduced rate. For example, in the UK, there is no APD payable by international passengers in transit.

By “transfer” are you referring to those passengers who continue with the same flight and flight number ? For example, QF 1 SYD-DXB-LHR.

I ask, because I believe these transfer passengers will not be charged the new fee.

    This.

Arrive/depart on different flight numbers and you pay.

Thanks for clarifying, FDOS-UK. I was attempting to clarify the issue as I’m sure many readers get confused about “transfer” and “transit.”

I am travelling to Dubai tomorrow. I cannot see if it is retrospective, or when it comes into force. This is another nasty tourist/visitor tax. I have seen my hotel in Dubai, adding a compulsory 10% service fee plus per night taxes. In the end it will become like US cities where you have so many taxes and fees the base price is means nothing. This is my first visit to Dubai, so i will keep an open mind. There are still many destinations worldwide that will benefit if the departure tax, becomes like APD in UK, and slowly becomes a big burden.

It’s a money making scam but then so is UK APD.

ontherunhome – The news only broke a few hours ago. The good news is that the tax does not take effect until July 01.

Other Gulf airports may follow DXB’s example. No news so far.

AMcWhirter, thanks and relevant to point out the difference indeed. I could have been clearer with regards to the flight number example.

ontherunhome, you wont be affected as it will come into force at booking/ ticket issue level and your tickets will have already been issued.

With the new concourse in place and the expected growth of that region it was only a matter of time that the money would need to come in from somewhere.

Nothing is set in stone when it comes to aviation.

According to this report six months ago in Arabian Business, the CEO of DXB said that Dubai had no plans to introduce an airport tax.

This continual adding of extra’s annoys me intensely. It may only be £6.50 now but for how long till they raise to £10.00 and then more. An what other charge will they then find to add.

It’s like in New York they add $1.50 for a Jacob K. Javits Convention Center tax. Why? If they want to build a convention centre why should visitors, who don’t even go there, pay for it just to appease locals who presumably don’t stay in hotels so don’t have to pay.

I’ve said before us regular travellers need a union which with a critical mass we can say “lets boycott Dubai” and go to Doha instead. If millions did this they’d soon change this practice as the amount of business they’d lose would hurt them directly in their pockets and not ours!

As posted on the BT article – those in transit in UK still pay the airport passenger surcharges – and in many other countries you still pay airport taxes whilst in transit. Looks like Dubai want to capitalize on the 10 of millions travelling via the airport – considering the investment they have made I’m not surprised they want to recoup some of the cost.

There seems to be a money making drive on in Dubai. The hotel levy (I was charged Dh25 last night), airport tax and also the 5% VAT from
    2018.

I think the whole model is starting to look over stressed again. Loads of empty property for example.
