Big boost for BA’s many Caribbean services exLGW, as these locations which lie just outside the tier for USA, will now be aligned with the lower USA tier (Band “B”) from April 2015.

Good news for Gatwick and our many links with the Commonwealth’s Caribbean nations.

    Well done, Gideon.

Assuming the airlines pass on the benefit, that’s a nice boost for travellers to the Far East and Australia.

It’s a pity that we have to wait until April 2015 for this to kick in but for my company it will generate some savings and as Mrs JH and I travel east far more than west for us personally to.

Would this thread not be better named Chancellor cuts APD? After all it’s about far more than the Caribbean.

Of course this tax should really be abolished in total, it’s a hang over from the Bliar/Brown socialist agenda and I’m surprised it has not been scrapped.

Of course the airlines are going to pass on the savings – NOT.

Being rather cynical, I think the base fare or “surcharges” will rise by the same amount as the decrease in APD. In fact this would be a good subject for BT to monitor nearer the time, check fares and see if the savings really do get passed on

This is great news for the whole UK airline industry and specific credit should go to the fearless and determined leadership of Willie Walsh who has led the industry in lobbying for a reduction in Air Passenger Duties.

You are having a laugh Hippo when Walsh has been leeching BA’s passengers with its fuel surcharges…

    http://www.extrapackofpeanuts.com/fuel-surcharge-list/

and what of Keith Williams the BA CEO, or is Walsh bullying him out of being the public face of BA?

Can somebody clarify the rules for passengers travelling in transit internationally into the UK – are they liable to pay APD?

    For example AMS-LHR-JFK ?

    Many Thanks

Eastbourneguy, not really sure about this subject, but by reading the rules as put forward in this link:

    http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageVAT_ShowContent&id=HMCE_CL_000505&propertyType=document#P807_70652

    Scroll to appendix 3.

According to the rules stipulated in Appendix 3 transit or connecting passengers are exempt from APD. So passengers travelling AMS-LHR-JFK would not be liable to pay APD.

It seems to me that is you have no direct connection from the UK to JFK (or any long haul destination for that matter) to check rates through Amsterdam Schiphol airport. It may save you a lot of money.
    Any comment anyone?

APD is not payable by passengers in transit.

Generally most taxes of this nature are not charged to passengers changing planes, that is the situation in Germany today and was the situation in Holland too (during the time when Holland had a similar tax).

Many Thanks for the replies – that explains it

Just as several wise posters predicted – the duplicitous nature of Walsh and co, whereas Hippo vainly attempted to spin it as a success ….

Gosh, every possible opportunity to criticise British Airways taken.

It’s almost as if CallMeIshmael/TetedeCuvee/Henkel.Trocken never left.

Some great deals to BA’s many Caribbean destinations in the current Economy/Premium Economy sale:

“BA has added £10 to its Caribbean fares.”

To be accurate, you might have added:

    a) Not all Caribbean fares

    b) So have Virgin
