Viking777ParticipantIm going on my first business trip to Addis Ababa and Nairobi in November. Can anyone recommend good hotels here? I have been looking at Hilton and Intercontinental in both cities. Seems there is not a lot of other choises from the big chains, specially not in Addis. Or am I missing something? If you can come up with the best restaurants aswell, it would be appreciated, thanks.

Stowage222ParticipantHi Viking
Not sure I can recommend the ‘best’ hotel as that is subjective.
However, I always stayed at the Serena in Nairobi (although not recently) http://www.serenahotels.com/serenanairobi/default-en.html.
In Addis it was the Hilton but that was the only good hotel available when I stayed there. http://www3.hilton.com/en/hotels/ethiopia/hilton-addis-ababa-ADDHITW/index.htmlIn Nairobi, although a bit of a tourist trap, if you like meat then Carnivore is a must just for the experience.

Hope this helps.

HBHLondonParticipantThe Hilton is a very good option in Addis. The rooms are a bit dated but the bar downstairs has a good atmosphere. I have stayed at the other business hotel in the city, I think the Sheraton, which is a bit of a gin palace, very very expensove but with bad plumbing and ok service.
In Nairobi I stay at the Fairview, which is not a 5 star hotel but is very good. Opt for a first class room. Locating is perfect, near several embassies. They also have serviced apartments in case the stay is longer.
In Nairobi Carnivore has become expensive and service and quality slipped (plus my credit card was cloned there). I love Talisman in Karen. It is fussion food of African with bits of Asian, Indian and European, very tasty. http://www.thetalismanrestaurant.com/main/
Of course if meat is your thing, Carnivore is a temple for it.

trusmanParticipantIn Nairobi it has to be the “ole sereni” its just outside of town so a cab ride is needed to town but hotel will book this legitimately for you, hotel staff are amazing, pool area looks out over the national park game reserve! rooms very good for Africa with good shower. Restaurant and bar also very good! I believe the BA crew also stay here as i have seen the crew that operated my flight in and around the hotel.

janrotterdamParticipantViking 777 – for Addis Abeba I would recommend the Sheraton. This is a very luxury hotel, outclassing the local Hilton by far.
For Nairoibi the Serena is a good recommendation.24 Sep 2012

sparkyflierParticipantI stayed at the Intercontinental in Nairobi, and chose it for location, good standard and loyalty programme, and I enjoyed my stay very much indeed. Staf were always willing and helpful, rooms were of a decent size (Club level), good options for food (including nice Indian rest.) the bar was lively and there was a reasonably sized pool.
Internet was very slow when i was there, but must have been improved by now.
I also considered the Serena, which I think may be even better, but is slightly further away and I wanted /needed convenience for my many meetings. One can also walk into the centre from the Intercont., although some would not suggest that!
(?) a boutique style hotel, and a Crowne Plaza, although from the website pics the pool looks more like a bathtub.I did have a drink at the Fairview, and thought it was most charming and I am sure good, and my local contacts also said it was a good option.
There is also the Norfolk, slighly away from town, and I ate there on the terrace, which has historic (think colonial times having G&T with Lord Delamere) value and I nice evening was spent there.
No idea about Addis but think the Sheraton Luxury Collection must be the best option.
Let us know what you choose and how it goes!

Deleted_UserParticipantHello Viking777
Unfortunately I haven’t been to either city, but I know there is a brand new Radisson Blu in Addis Ababa.
Have a great trip!

londonladParticipantIn Nairobi a new 5 star hotel, the Sankara, opened recently and sets new standards for the city. Very cool champagne bar on the roof.

jetplaneParticipantIn Addis the Sheraton is easily the best option, but price is high. In Nairobi, depending where your meetings are (think Bangkok esque traffic circa 1991) stay in town (CBD) at the aforementioned Fairview – very pleasant, in Westlands where the tech companies are (Google / safaricom etc) stay at the Sankara and for access to UN offices / Diplomatic area the new Tribe hotel at Village Market. The Carnivore was good in the 80s and dire thereafter. Sankara has winebar and good food although you’ll find several good restaurants accross all cusine types. Karibuni as they will say!!

RBrown9ParticipantIn Addis, do not go near the Intercontinental. It is not part of IC Hotels. The Hilton has a good reputation but is showing its age. The Sheraton is magnificent but can be expensive. In Nairobi, the Intercontinental is not a great choice. Expensive, poor service, rooms not great. Suggest the Tribe at Village Market (expensive). Others than are good include the Mayfair in Westlands (operated by Southern Sun), Norfolk (Fairmont – not the best location but historic and charming). Also heard that Fairview and Sankara are great.

LondonianParticipantI have stayed in both the Hilton and the Sheraton in Addis, and the Sheraton for me was a much better option. Unless it has been recently upgraded, the Hilton was a bit shabby although a better location.
Have fun in Addis and the food and coffee in town are great.24 Sep 2012

Viking777ParticipantThanks to all of you for the very usefull information,
I have decided to stay in Sheraton in Addis and the Sankara in Nairobo. 3 nights in each. After Nairobi my wife will join me for a 6 days safari in Masai mara with hotair ballooning etc. Really looking forward to this.
I managed to get an millage upgrade to first on LH to ADD and first on SWISS return from NBO (my pay grade only allows for J/C travel). So im getting quite exited to go on my first business trip to sub-sahara Africa. It looks to be a very good trip (if I can sell the 30tons of goods I have waiting in Guangzhou):-).Thanks again.
