Best delay ever

BigDog.ParticipantSome weekend fun. Has a delay ever worked out very positively for you? Share your experience.
In the DM article below, the delayed passengers enjoyed a further day at a 4* hotel in Cancun. (Thomson is usually panned but appear to have got it sorted this time)

In September 2007 my partner and I spent one week at the Bom Bom Island resort just off Principe Island, São Tomé and Principe ( see http://www.bombomprincipe.com). We had a fabulous stay – for five out the seven days we were the only guests. We sought to extend our stay by one day but couldn’t do so because the flight on the following day to São Tomé was full. However on the day of our scheduled departure our flight was cancelled. We were rebooked for the following day. Thanks to the assistance of our travel agent Navetur Equatur Sao Tome Airways subsequently paid for our additional night at Bom Bom. It couldn’t have worked out better.

1nfrequentParticipantWhen the snow shut down LGW about 4 years or so ago, I was in Orlando. Ended up staying out there for another 2 days before I could get a flight back. Thanks to my travel insurance all my costs were covered (I was at the Hard Rock Hotel and they agreed to use the discounted rate I’d booked under for the additional nights rather than the rack rate) and I spent the time doing rollercoasters at Universal Studios. Best delay ever.

FrequentTravellerParticipant1) I was in San Francisco and needed to change my return flight back to London to a week later. But I could not because it was a non-changeable ticket. To fly a week later I would have had to purchase a new ticket, which I declined to do. So I boarded my original return flight as usual. There was a delay due a problem with refuelling the plane. After two hours we were asked to leave the plane. As it was getting late some people were going to miss their connections in London and would have to overnight at Heathrow. Hence we were given the option to rebook, even if we did not have a connection. Great, my non-changeable ticket, became changeable. I got my extra week in San Francisco without paying anything extra to the airline.
2) Another time I was on an overnight Amtrak train from Seattle to Emeryville the station for San Francisco. We prepaid for accommodation on the train which included meals. The train was due to arrive into Emeryville early morning. We had nothing planned on the morning of our arrival into San Francisco and I was worried that the hotel would probably not allow us to check into our room so early in the day. During the night our train was delayed over five hours due to a derailment of a freight train in front of us on the single line track. We got a restful night’s sleep as the train was stopped a lot, got to see some scenery we would not normally have seen in the morning and got an extra lunch free of charge on the train. Finally arriving at the hotel in the afternoon, so there was no issue with obtaining our room on arrival.

TallinnmanParticipantI was with a group of clients in Barbados for the T20 World Cup when the Ash Cloud got involved – first it was a 24 hour delay. Simply perfect as we were originally only using 4 out of the 5 nights accommodation booked (it was cheaper than paying for 4 and included a massage and 2 rounds of golf!) so we would simply stay put in the Sandy Lane for an extra day.
Turned out only to be 5 hour delay – gutted, but worked perfectly as we were playing golf on the last morning and lunch was a more ‘relaxed’ affair than planned.3 Jan 2015

LuganoPirateParticipantBack in the 80’s SIA served Male (Maldives) twice a week. Due to the monsoon hitting the plane was unable to land and as a result I had three extra glorious days (the rain had cleared up by the next morning) at their expense. Bliss.
