pointyendpreferredParticipantI am flying EK First Class next week (including the new non-stop horror Dubai to Auckland and back though extremely grateful I shall be in 1A) and just checked the baggage allowance.
The Emirates website boasts:
“Emirates has one of the world’s most generous baggage policies.
30kg in Economy Class
40kg in Business Class
50kg in First Class”My other family members are flying Etihad soon and they allow first class pax 32kg x2 per person (=64kg).
In First BA allows 32kg x3 (=96kg!!)
Our last trip was on Iberia in business and IB allows 23kg x3 per person (=69kg)
Why does Emirates think they are so generous?

AMcWhirterParticipantpointyendpreferred – Once upon a time in good old IATA days many years ago, baggage allowances were fixed and all airlines were obliged to adhere to them.
But nowadays airlines may consider extra baggage allowance as a marketing tool.
That is why some airlines offer a higher allowance than others although it can depend on factors like aircraft type, the routing and the particular market (i.e. ethnic or VFR or student) which is being served.

Charles-PParticipantOne of my staff recently complained to Lufthansa cabin crew because he had watched two men place a bag in the locker above his head that took both of them to lift, he was genuinely worried for his safety. The crew agreed and told the men to remove it and it was transferred to the hold.

Are you saying you liked the IATA days? I always thought of IATA as stifling competition with its archaic rules to protect the cumbersome flag carriers.

TimFitzgeraldTCParticipantEmirates see themselves as generous because in Economy they were pretty much 1st to go to 30Kg’s when everyone was 1 piece or 20/23Kg’s for routes out to Asia (and when other airlines were cutting allowance back from Weight to 1 piece concept).
Now most airlines flying that way have all upped to 30Kg’s such as SQ,QR,EY (for economy) though interestingly still not Cathay (who only give a 30Kg baggage allowance in Business).
Also those who get status on EK get an extra 12kg on top of allowance for Silver or 16Kg for Gold. So yes in First – maybe not as generous as others – in economy it is a leader in terms of allowances.

AMcWhirterParticipantMrMichael – I agree. Best to remove “good.” I was being a little sarcastic.
Tim – Interestingly, VS has its own rules re baggage allowances with Y passengers able to take more luggage on certain routes.
For example, a Y passenger flying ex-UK or ex-USA to India is allowed two pieces up to 23 kgs each. The same applies ex-UK/USA to Nigeria. But when flying VS to South Africa, the ex-UK passenger is allowed the standard one piece but if flying from the USA he/she can take two pieces !
The VS Upper Class (business class) passenger is allowed three pieces (each one up to 32 kgs) on all routes.
One wonders if generous allowances will be cut back for some of the ultra long-haul flights which are in the planning stage. In particular. I’m thinking of SIA’s SIN-NYC A350 service which will take almost 19 hours non-stop.

MarcusGBParticipantEtihad have always had generous baggage allowances, since they started, which i think is around 13 years ago now. certainly Economy has been 30kg for a long time.
On top of these as with any Airline, go the FFP allowances, which at Gold or Platinum allow around the 96kg Mark!
For Long haul, and long stay be they Leisure or Business, this is very handy being away from home for so long, adding these allowances onto the Business or First.23 Feb 2016

PerthWAParticipantIt may be ‘generous’ from emirates POV but don’t be 1 kilo over your limit or you will pay, pay, pay as I have had to do on many occasions.
The last having left LHR with underweight bags, spent 2 days in DXB adding zero to the baggage only to find that I was magically, 8 kilos over!
Can you argue? No. Can you plead? No. Can you ask for another set of scales? No. Its just a finger point to the excess window… and that’s that.
Oh and I was flying business with platinum extra weight privileges too.
