rfergusonParticipantJust saw online that BA is to withdraw from the Gatwick – Manchester market from Mar 31st.
Wonder if this will be the first of several announcements regarding LGW.
I heard just yesterday from a management source that the turnaround BA had hoped for at LGW just isnt happening and that further route cuts are imminent.

VintageKrugParticipantRoute cuts don’t necessarily mean a reduction in BA presence at the airport. I’d be bullish for BA’s presence there, less so about their shorthaul network, which should be sold off.

VintageKrugParticipantThe shorthaul business should be sold off or closed.
I’d give it a maximum of 1-2 years.
Money from the sale used to focus on a premium leisure and long/thin routes. Dreamliner-sized aircraft were made for this market.
It may be no co-incidence the investment was made to extend the life of the longhaul 767 fleet…..

BeckyBoopParticipantBA shouldnt pull out totally from short haul as it may cause problems people who want to take flights exEU and more importantly people living in other parts of the UK that dont live close to London to get on to Long Haul route or short haul in to europe. All the gulf carriers almost have at least one flight from every major UK airport

DrumochterParticipantVery disheartening announcement – particularly given that Virgin are about to commence a service on this route albeit from LHR. First it was Aberdeen and now Manchester – will BA abandon the UK regions from Gatwick?
Could one way forward for IAG be an “Iberia Express” type operation out of Gatwick. Similar customer experience to BA mainline but with reduced operating costs with regard to crews, handling contracts etc. May I be bold and suggest a name for this new, lean, operator: “Dan Air – London” ๐

millionsofmilesParticipantSo finally British Airways is morphing into “Heathrow Airways”, where pax have to source their own feeder traffic?
More people will take the available nonstops from non-LHR airports with other carriers like KLM, LH, EK and so on.
BA will have to rely on LHR traffic.Such a downfall from the once glorious days of being a leading European airline, not being able to afford some selfmade feeder traffic.

Gin&TonicParticipantEuropean (KL,AF,AY,LX, etc) and Middle East carriers are already mopping up business in the UK regions, with very competitive rates in all classes. If BA seriously believes it can offer a product to/from only the major European cities and use Lhr as a hub itโs delusional. They may get good yields in business and first from UK or should I say south of Watford UK customers, but they will never fill economy.

VintageKrugParticipantBA has one of the lowest proportions of economy cabin passengers of any airline; just take a look at the 777 seatmap to see that:

Quite apart from reducing transfer options, this is about focussing on what BA does best; higher value transfer and business traffic which wants to access London and beyond, creating a frequent shuttle connecting at LHR to BA’s mainline network.
