OK, not like it’s industry leading or anything but at least a positive move.

BA will increase spending on its catering from July this year to the tune of £30M.

    – US west coast to LHR and vice versa will see two full hot meals introduced into J/W/Y instead of the current ‘afternoon tea’ or ‘continental breakfast’ set up. (LAX/SFO/SAN/PHX)
    – The main dish on the Club World menu will be plated in the galley (usually beef).
    – J class -Plastic fruit pots for breakfast, sandwiches wrapped in cellophane gone and replaced with more premium product.
    – Y class – the current breakfast offering on east coast – LHR night flights (the infamous ‘muffin or nuffin’) to be replaced with a breakfast box as per currently on the west coast – LHR flights.
    – Y class – cheese and biscuits back on the tray!
    – Y class – pretzels back with the pre dinner bar service.
    – W class – sparkling wine as part of pre take off drinks.
    – F/J class LHR-JFK – Catering supplier changed to Do&Co.

I think its a shame afternoon tea is going. So very British! Do&Co, following in Lufthansa’s footsteps there aren’t they?

Do&Co cater for Turkish Airlines, as well as the F1 Paddock Club, so definitely a step in the right direction as far as quality goes!

    Definitely a positive step.

Interesting that Do&Co only used on one particular route …

    @rferguson

Thanks for the informative update as always. One question though – do you know if these changes (especially the J class ones!) will also apply to the LGW long haul routes as they are often the poor relation?!

@ jordanD – as JFK is the ‘flagship route’ (and to counter the VS/DL JV) JFK will get special attention. The menus for HKG and TYO will also see an increased investment (for example more japanese options of NRT/HND routes).

@ rockhopper – I don’t THINK these changes are to be rolled out at LGW but not 100% sure. Will try find out!

Also confirmed that the refurbished 747’s will increase to 86J class seats.

The initial post only refers to US routes.I presume that the enhanced catering extends to longhaul routes worldwide w.e.f. July 2015 and is not merely being introduced on US routes.

CharlesRhona you are correct. There is £X that will be spent on increasing the quality of the meals across the longhaul network. The two hot meals on LHR-west Coast US flights is simply to bring them in line with similar length routes which already receive this (ie BLR/HYD/MAA). There will also be a focus on Japan and Hong Kong catering.

The other additions (cheese etc) will be across the longhaul network.

Probably wishful thinking but does the spend include better quality wines!
