I understood from posts in the last few months that offerings in CW and F were going to get a face lift mid May (ish). Not flown longhaul since the end of March but have a couple coming up between now and September and wondered what to expect, especially if in old First without the new ovens.
    Any experiences from posters?
    Thanks
    Lloyd

Things are slowly being changed, but I wouldn’t expect to see anything noticeable for now. A new Director of Customer arrived earlier this year who put a hold on anything new being introduced. He has come from an hotel background, so perhaps wants to make things better than what was proposed (well, we hope). So I’d wait a wee while for any changes. I’ve read in various articles that he is going to focus on Club World first, introduce CW Mains to World Traveller plus (along with other upgrades), Club Europe and Economy (tuck boxes returning long-haul, for example). I’ve not read much about First, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t introducing things there.

BA have long ridden on the tails of their hard products, and many of the nice parts of the journey have been “enhanced” away. We can only hope this new director is good at getting things back on board (cheese and dessert, for example, rather than cheese or dessert in Club World). Heck, charge us all an extra £20, but give us something back for that. Something good. It can’t be that difficult.

Club Europe really needs a change – those 1/2 meal trays look like you’re having lunch at a junior school. Breakfast is just horrible, and the “afternoon tea” wouldn’t feed a hungry 5 year old. Real people like real food…hopefully that will make a comeback soon.

From personal experience in the past 3 – 4 weeks, I have enjoyed superb meals in both BA F and J. In addition, the cabin crew have been able to provide great flexibility in creating mix and match dishes to suit my dietary requirements.

Everything below club world though needs a revamp. If you want something special though, as I have previously suggested, book a special meal, they are excellent.

I have heard that the catering improvements in F and CW will now not happen until the end 2011/beginning of 2012.
I flew F recently to the states, and the main course was disgusting, the starter and desert were acceptable……the service was not great either, it was the new mixed fleet crew and not very professional. Flew back in CW and the service was great, and the food was good too.

Thanks for the replies. Looks as if it will be a bit hit or miss still. I have to say that the only meal I have been truly disappointed with recently was in CW. Pudding came out as if it had been microwaved since 1980. I know it’s not the end of the world but if you’re straight off the flight into work a decent feeling round the personal equator helps.

I believe it will be the end of the year before all the catering changes are complete. BA serves around 100,000 meals per day (probably more) and so lead times for new ingredients, arranging new suppliers and sourcing can take a while.

I spoke to Gate Gourmet’s Steven Walpole at a BA event recently and he was full steam ahead with the changes, with a good sized budget to match, so I don’t think there’s any delay.

Steven Walpole may not have any delay, but given his poor showing on the Heston Blumenthal / BA programme a few months back, that puts fear into my heart…Gate Gourmet (and their chefs) should be given a contract holiday from BA, and given over to someone better – a school dinner lady, perhaps?

Hmm. I don’t disagree with you there, StephenLondon.

However, the Gate Gourmet contract has a while left to run yet; it will be interesting who gets it when it comes up for renewal.

I took CW to Sandiego last night. the food was the same as usual in terms of quality, the salad was good, the beef..well the sauce was like water but generally ok, not bad, not great. The menu card did mention Hestons input but I couldnt really see the difference in taste. They only had 2 choices of wine. Service was acceptable, tray just dropped on table and 30 minutes between courses.

generally flight was ok as expected in CW, one thing i did experiance was teh cabin was unbelievebly hot, the hottest I can ever remember on board any flight…so hot that I was pouring sweat along with other passengers and to link to another thread I actually took my socks off on a flight for the first time!

I did, and they responded with they will see what they can do.

SD is a mixed fleet route. Maybe their accelerated training regime failed to cover cabin climate control.

Did you raise the cabin temp with the crew?

It’s not acceptable to be overly warm; I am amazed how few people actually make their discomfort known to crew; unless they are informed there is little they can to alleviate the issue, but once informed it’s easily sorted.

As mentioned, changes have started, but take time to flow through to us passengers.

If you don’t get any joy, these things should be escalated; I have frequently requested the CSD come and see me, and on one occasion when nothing seemed to change stood over them in the office of the 747 where the temp control is located to ensure it is reduced.

All the above incidents occurred on legacy fleet.

An overly warm cabin is unacceptable, and should not be tolerated, though to be fair to the crew they do often find it rather chilly if they are sitting nearer to the doors; however, it’s no reason for me to be roasted to the extent I can’t get a decent night’s sleep.

To be fair to the crew, it is not unknown to have people with very different preferences travelling.

In summer, I like to sleep no cooler than 25c, because this termperature is what we set on the aircon at home, to void dropping too far below the normal temperature. I can sleep without problems up to 29, although wake up feeling a littlewarm/

One’s body does get used to it.

Some people like it a lot cooler.

Guess you can’t please all of the people all of the time.
