Has anyone used the automatic passport gates at Atlanta? Do they save any time?

If you are talking about Global Entry, it is incredibly fast and is available at most, if not all USA points of entry.

I was there last week and watched people speed through much faster than my ‘TSA Precheck’… as I understand it, not open to non US citizens like me.

TSA Pre Check is randomly (very) granted to non US citizens. It all depends on the airline you are flying and whether you have Global Entry.

I am a UK passport holder, and yes, they work great. It is not global entry, all you need is a visa waiver. Similar machines have turned up at DFW too. But the downside is that they then pass you to another queue for customs. No net gain.
