Qatar Airways is to become the shirt sponsor of Barcelona FC from next season – and we’ve decided to compile a list of football clubs sponsored by airlines here.

    To kick us off (sorry):

    Emirates – Arsenal
    Etihad – Manchester City
Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia – QPR
    Easyjet – Luton Town

The announcer at my club, made a big thing of introducing some Turkish Airlines top banana and his wife as very special guests a coupleof weeks ago……

After saying that, our very eccentric owner then threatened the supporters with closure the week after !!

Emirates are Shirt Sponsors for AC Milan, Paris St German and Hamburg. They also have lesser sponsorships with Real Madrid and Olympiakos.

There also sponsor clubs in other sports as well as do Etihad.

American Airlines – Fulham (secondary sponsor)

On the same subject – Delta have opened a Lounge at Chelsea FC, walked past it a few weeks ago and had a take a double take at it.

    DELTA 360? LOUNGE TAKES OFF

Delta Air Lines have launched the new Delta 360? Lounge at Stamford Bridge.

Located within the Millennium & Copthorne Hotel, the lounge will host our official airline partner’s VIP guests on matchdays and provide a new venue for hotel guests and visitors for breakfast and refreshments.

The 360° Lounge uses Delta and Chelsea branding to create a distinct atmosphere. Guests attending games will receive airline-style tickets inviting them to ‘check-in’ for the match at the lounge. An LED-lit ‘runway’ leads guests to a dedicated entrance where inside they can enjoy top-flight hospitality, see Blues players past and present on Chelsea TV and watch the game screened live. Inside they will also learn more about the partnership between the US airline and the European champions.

Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay said: ‘The Delta 360? Lounge showcases our innovative and creative approach towards our commercial partnerships. It allows Delta to have a year-round connection with Chelsea Football Club at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea is now a real focal point in London for Delta customers, staff and partners and will offer B2B opportunities for both the club and the airline.’

Perry Cantarutti, Delta’s senior vice president for Europe, Middle East and Africa added: ‘We are delighted to open the new 360° Lounge at Chelsea FC. The lounge is an important feature of our sponsorship deal and enables us to bring a taste of Delta’s service from the sky to the stadium, adding another exciting element to the Chelsea FC experience for our customers and partners.’

The lounge is Delta’s first outside the United States and joins a number of similar dedicated venues that the airline has opened at the home of US sports teams it sponsors. These include baseball’s New York Yankees, hockey’s Los Angeles Kings and American football’s Minnesota Vikings.

Comprising 108 square metres, the new Delta 360? Lounge includes a full service bar and dining area.Outside of matchdays it is open daily between 7am and 10pm and is expected to attract up to 250,000 visitors each year.

Flybe was a sponsor of Southampton but don’t think they are now. One of their Q400 was named Matt Le Tissier

As well as asking who sponsors which club, I would be interested in exploring why. I freely confess that on this subject if nothing else, I am at one with VK – which particular football club (or rather, if you are English, which particular set of hired foreign mercenaries) wins and which loses is something that does not much disturb my day.

But it clearly disturbs a lot of other people’s days. Enough for airlines and others to throw many millions at the game in sponsorship, and for otherwise level-headed if not aggressively hard-headed businessmen (eg Abramovich) to squander huge sums. Is there any evidence that Emirates have got value for money for the naming rights on Arsenal’s stadium? Does Air Malaysia reflect with pride and pleasure, or even with jingling pockets, on their sponsorship of Queens Park Rangers, the only English club not to have a single win this season?

In short, the question is whether the average airline passenger cares at all who the airline sponsors, and does the average football fan care at all who is sponsoring her or his team? And if the answer is no, which I suspect it is, why do the airlines throw their money away?

Regular readers of this forum will know that few of us have much good to say for Mr O’Leary. But I suspect we will all agree that he is a shrewd businessman. And Ryanair does not waste its money sponsoring overpaid prima-donnas to kick a leather ball around.

Some airline-related ME news…Al Ahli club Dubai and dnata recently announced a new partnership which will see the travel services company sponsor the football club for the next two years.

I am not a football fan myself, but I know many who go out of their way to fly with the airline that sponsors their favourite football team. I don’t know if there are enough of them to make a difference to each airline, but they are certainly out there!
