    AirAsia scraps fuel surcharge

Malaysia’s budget airline AirAsia Group announced that it is Abolishing its Fuel Surcharge effective Today for all group airlines following the DROP in global crude oil prices.

AirAsia Group Chief Executive Tony Fernandes said in a statement that the decision to end the surcharge was made in November 2014 in line with declining global oil prices.

“We believe removing the fuel surcharge and reducing travel costs will be a huge boost to the tourism industry,” he said.

With the removal of the fuel surcharge, customers are now required to pay only the air fare, the administration fee and airport tax.

But here in Europe, Ryanair and Easyjet have never imposed fuel surcharges.

The big question is whether or not fares will fall or whether Air Asia will increase the base fare to compensate. That’s hard if not impossible to tell because LCCs have so many price tiers and the number of seats within each tier can simply be reduced.
