Air Serbia A320-200, Paris to Belgrade

Departure from CDG 2 D which is not ideal laid out, Lounge is landside with security check after leaving the lounge. Despite the display boards indicating that the flight was on schedule, the inbound flight did not arrive until 30mins before scheduled departure, pushed back approx 45 mins late.

Airbus A320-200 cabin was spotless and a delight compared to other s/haul Euro airlines, proper C class seats, two rows of 2 -2, with a fixed 'hard' bulkhead behind row 2, not the usual economy seats with centre seat left empty. Welcomed on board with choice of drinks, water, juice or Mumm Cordon Rouge champagne, and a warm face towel. Captain apologised for late departure, due to missing pax on the inbound flight and delays locating/removing their baggage.

Short taxi (unusual for CDG) and smooth take off at 21.25. Menu booklets handed out once in the air, followed by a drinks service with a bowl of warm mixed nuts, meal orders taken.

Starter, stuffed chicken breast with marinated potato salad, grilled peppers and sun dried tomatoes, Main, choice of Sole with mixed vegetables, asparagus and hot tartar sauce or seared Beef Fillet, peppercorn sauce, baby potatoes, carrots and sprouts, followed by Lemon Meringue pie.

As well as the Mumm champagne there was a choice of two reds (Serbian Cab/Sav and Argentine Malbec) and two white wines ( Serbian Chardonnay or Chilean Sav Blanc) with whisky gin and vodka if required. I chose the beef which was a little dry and overdone (maybe due to flight delay?) and stayed with the champagne during the meal.

Arrived at Belgrade one and three quarter hours after take off, only twenty minutes behind schedule, so not as bad as I had expected prior to boarding.

The leather seat was very comfortable, extremely spacious (wider seat squab than BA CW!) with plenty of legroom and reasonable recline. Tablets were handed out after take off, pre-loaded with films, but as it was such a short flight, and the meal was served so promptly, I didn't bother to use mine.

It was a refreshing change to have decent seats and catering on such a short flight, and highlighted just how far behind most other Euro airlines are with their short haul product.

Return journey to Paris highlighted a couple of issues with Air Serbia, firstly, no on line check in! It has to be done at the airport, but at least there is a separate Business Class check in area so no queues.

Second issue was that they could not issue a boarding card for my onward connecting flight out of Paris, the Air Serbia flight was operated as a code share with AF, but no integration of check in systems. I was able to check myself in for the second flight once in the lounge though.

Flight uneventful, same standards on board as on the outbound, except on this flight only two out of the eight C class seats were occupied. Similar catering with a cold smoked beef and potato salad starter, choice of Chicken, stuffed with Spinach, or Sea Bass for hot mains, Chocolate cake for dessert. On time departure and arrival at Paris. The improved cabin layout may be something to do with their tie up with Etihad, acting as a feeder service into Abu Dhabi for Etihad long haul flights.
