Air Malta Teeters on the Edge of Bankruptcy, Despite €52m Handout

Doesn't look good for state-supported Air Malta and its tiny fleet of 12 shorthaul aircraft:

www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20110713/local/Air-Malta-may-not-survive-strike.375219

"Air Malta is surviving from day to day and the pilots' planned one-day strike would cost it millions, perhaps even sounding the death knell for the beleaguered airline, senior company officials told The Times yesterday.

The officials said the company was staying afloat on what remains of the €52 million rescue aid package it was given last November and on the cash it is generating from one day to the next. A standstill of one day, especially in summer, could be enough to make the airline bankrupt."

Luckily the strike has been called off:

http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20110713/local/air-malta-pilots-strike-called-off.375371

..but the airline is far from out of the woods yet, and is obviously in a very precarious position.

Don't believe all you read in the newspapers.

I had a long chat with a very senior Air Malta captain last night about the current position on the tech crew negotiations and I also understand the politics in Malta, which you don't seem to.

Then again, you probably believe that the euro will fold next week, too.

Edited to add that this comment is in reference to your first post, whith which it crossed.

I have a reasonable insight into the outcome, but I'm not going to share it here.

DisgustedofSwieqi - 13/07/2011 21:39 GMT

Two senior BA cabin crew members told me you don't understand the industry and your last certainly seems to suggest that.

As for the euro, we'll see.

9 years ago I got 62 pence for my euro, today I get 88.

I think you should worry about things nearer to home.

The pound is now the reserve currency of choice of only6% of the funds in the world.

If you think the major players in the EU will let the euro project fail, you need your head examining; it is central to the european project.

Change is another matter, we will see.

+++++Nice to see you have edited your previous post to withdraw the prediction of the absolute failure of the euro.

Thats why i invest in the Reminbi...and never in airlines!

DisgustedofSwieqi - 13/07/2011 22:13 GMT

How to end up with a million from the airline industry, invest ten ;-)

Old as the hills, but ....

DisgustedofSwieqi - 14/07/2011 11:45 GMT

"Malteser's taxpayers,"

Are you taking medication at the moment?

The following clip carries the introduction "The best tasting balls I've ever had in my life."

Given that you write the best balls I've ever read, it seemed appropriate to add this.

More importantly, have you forgotten to take yours?

Right; I think we should draw a line under this silliness - I would imagine it's rather dull for others on the board to read your sniping and constant contradictions.

DisgustedofSwieqi - 14/07/2011 11:53 GMT

Vintage Prat.

You started this thread as a dig and you also re-commented this morning, to re-stoke the fires.

Now you bug out using the excuse that it is to save others reading my comments.

Definitely the behaviour of vermouth passing itself off as champagne.

And won't even comment on your gammar.

trident3 - 15/07/2011 12:18 GMT

Get a room, you two, FFS.....

DClinPsy - 15/07/2011 12:48 GMT

in addition to trident3,

get a life, you two.....

DisgustedofSwieqi - 15/07/2011 12:56 GMT

Gentlemen

No one is forcing you to read this, with the greatest of respect.

Irons80 - 15/07/2011 12:58 GMT

Oh and you're right that you can't comment on his 'gammar' since you can't seem to spell 'grammar'

SimonRowberry - 15/07/2011 13:11 GMT

Chaps,

As an outsider to this spat, can I just make one observation (as a disinterested party in this thread)?

This Forum amazes me at times - is it only here where we can have the same (to some extent) parties participating in one thread about how we should be more tolerant toward each other, yet go at each other like hammer and tongs on a concurrent thread?

You couldn't make some of this up.

As said above by Trident3, FFS. With all due respect....

Simon

Irons80 - 15/07/2011 13:13 GMT

All good fun isn't it? Maybe he'll finally learn his lesson and amend the way he goes about posting when he's met with someone equally as cantankerous as he is?

SimonRowberry - 15/07/2011 13:18 GMT

Hi Irons,

I have no flight or disagreement with you at all, but you are adding fuel to the fire somewhat!!

Simon

DisgustedofSwieqi - 15/07/2011 13:24 GMT

Simon

This thread and also the other one about CE are the reason I started the thread about Binman being attacked.

VK and I have a bit of history and I am sure that he enjoys our 'debates' as much as I do - who else do you think the post about Air Malta was aimed at (started 22:22) , especially after it appeared around the time I said Club was a better product than Club Europe and rebutted VK's reponse? (22:13)

Binman only ever posts in a respectful tone.

DClinPsy - 15/07/2011 13:32 GMT

Dear Arch Angles and Arch Devils of Air Malta,
why not sing this to each other? ;-)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qScjGvaix0
#TranceFamily,

Peace and happy flying people!

Irons80 - 15/07/2011 13:33 GMT

Binman doesn't even appear on this thread!!

DisgustedofSwieqi - 15/07/2011 13:34 GMT

But that would take all the fun away ;-)

Nice clip though, thanks for posting that.

SimonRowberry - 16/07/2011 01:42 GMT

DoS,

I have not the least problem with either you or VK. Indeed, you have both posted information over time that I have benefitted from, for which I am grateful to you both.

I suspect that many of us (well, let's face it, one has to be pretty thick not to) have noted that this is purely a VK-motivated attack on you and your support for Air Malta. It's a wind-up. Intended to elicit a response. Simple as that.

Let it go - or let him win? Your choice. I just think must of the rest of us "regulars" find that the real issues behind the posting (i.e. an EU airline potentially going tits-up) get (at best) clouded (and at worst lost) by the personal implications behind the exchange.

I have no issue with you or, indeed, VK. I just think it disappointing that he could think such a serious situation worthy of a dig. I'm also disappointed that you rose to such an obvious bait.

However, as I've posted elsewhere, I'm just "full of sh*t" as I've been told. So what do my views matter?

Sleep well, travel safely and avoid the wedgies. Both of you (VK and DoS).

Oh, and if you're ever both on the same QF flight, don't do this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Fiennes

As I've said, I think that VK is well out of order in trying to wind you up, DoS, and I am disappointed that you took the bait. The rest of us really aren't interested, I would think. Just irritated that you both have the arrogance to carry out your personal vendettas in public.

I was going to suggest that you should both exchange email addresses and argue this out in private. Silly me. I forgot:

1. That wouldn't satisfy either of your personal egos

2. Neither of you have the basic manhood to come out from behind your pseudonyms and admit whom you are, and stand accountable for your comments.

As I said, I have nothing against either of you personally in the least (as far as you can hold anything personal against a pseudonym, that is). However, I am just somewhat disappointed.

And please don't throw abuse/insults at me for saying the above, as that will just prove me right and disappoint me in you both even further.

Please be constructive, chaps - you both offer and contribute so much positive stuff to this Forum when you're not picking an argument with each other (or, indeed someone / anyone else).....

Simon
