I fly in 4 days with EI in Y (intra Europe) and having booked a pre-order meal (as I have done before) I just received an email saying that they wont be providing the meal (with usual apologies for inconveniencing me)

To get back the €7.50 I prepaid, I have to enter an online reclaim system, fill in all my details etc and then wait 10 days !!

Anyone similarly affected ? Is it some major change by EI (cannot understand why I am getting 5 days notice if it was just a local operational issue)

I assume Pat Jordan would be embarrassed by this poor service by EI !!

I don’t understand why Pat Jordan would be embarassed?

    Does he do the catering?

I wonder if your flight has been subbed-out which could explain why they can’t do the catering.

Quite crappy that they don’t automatically process the refund though.

    Hi SwissExPat,

not too sure why pre-order meals are cancelled; I would have thought it to be a good revenue stream for EI.

You could contact Aer Lingus customer relations at aerlingus.com/feedback. This might provide an explanation.

The pre-order menu is still on the Aer Lingus website as of a few minutes ago.

Let us know what response you get, Swiss.

    Hi Pat

It is a puzzle indeed (since I did a dummy booking for a few weeks ahead and they are still offering the meals for sale)

I suspect that Mkcol78 might be right and there is a subbing of aircraft/crew etc.

This happened me once ex LCY where a BA flight to ZRH ws subbed out for a 3rd party carrier (whilst the other aircraft was undergoing maintenance) but the catering trolley was provided by BA and we got the full normal BA CLub service in J.

I have sent an email to EI asking for clarification.

It is pity because the meal provided has been good in the past and I invariably order one.

I am not sure if there are hidden Ts & Cs, but I would have thought that if you have ordered and paid for a special meal then you have a contract, which EI are bound to deliver on. If it were me, wearing my devil hat, I would write back and point this out and state that I expect them to perform the contract they have entered into, sit back, and see what happens (and buy myself a sandwich…) 😉

    Update post flight :

I took the flight and on boarding, I asked the head Steward as to what had happened to the meal order. He knew about it and asked if I had received an email. I said I had received the mail so at least I knew that I would not received the meal I pre-paid for and selected

All he said was that “They are ‘up to their eyes’ with some new meal development and have been cancelling meals on flights recently”

Strangely one can still actually order meals on EI flights (I did a dummy booking)

    All very unsatisfactory.

In the procedures book on how to torture your passengers (to which all airlines based in the US subscribe), this is definitely a new one. FUNNY!
