I have just been through Singapore Changi and had the pleasure of enjoying both the Qantas and BA lounges. Both are relatively new but there are startling differences.

BA – Great hardware and more of a luxurious feel. Warm welcome from the front desk staff but otherwise staff limited to clearing plates and glasses. Help yourself buffet service for food and drink.

Qantas – More contemporary but less luxurious. Warm welcome from the front desk and plenty of staff in the lounge itself. Bar staff eager to serve, top you up, make a cocktail and engage in conversation. Appetizers brought round the lounge to staff. There is a buffet but also live cooking stations to order food.

In short both were good lounges but only one had service. Now what is BA’s motto. ‘To fly to serve’ (but not on the ground)!?

I personally quite like the self service setup in terms of the bar. It means i can go to the when i want and not wait to be served, enjoy looking at the bottles and choice on offer – maybe reading the wine bottles first before selecting and then pouring a measure to how thirsty I am…i could even make my own cocktail if i so desired.

In terms of different food options and stations its nice to have a choice but it depends how big the airlines presence is at that hub and also what their usual setup is. Some lounges are far worse, I guess that’s the nice thing when you get the choice to visit more than one on a possible trip at the same airport.

The difference between self-service and the other is usually a no-brainer – easier to look after yourself. However, really top-rank bar staff can change all that.

When I have a real choice of flights out of LHR to some destinations, the bar staff in the United lounge at the terminal 2 B gates can swing it for me. They are obviously used to making a martini to the American taste, and they ask what martini you want and get it absolutely right. That has swung a couple of choices to Egyptair for me. Does MS know what they owe to the United bar?
