They can of course buy miles or transfer them into Diamond Club from American Express Membership Rewards.

A relative could apply, get the miles and purchase a reward flight on your/wife's behalf.

If you apply for the bmi plus card you could get 24,000 miles once you spend £250, though there is an annual fee of £60:
