London’s St James Theatre to open in September

14 Aug 2012 by BusinessTraveller
Theatregoers will have reason to celebrate this autumn with the opening of the new-build St James Theatre in Victoria. Located on Palace Street just two minutes from Victoria Station with its fast links to London Gatwick Airport via the Gatwick Express, the new theatre builds on London’s reputation for world class theatre, but with modern seating, acoustics, air-conditioning and even an onsite restaurant. Robert Mackintosh, St James’ joint CEO and creative director, said that his intention was to fill a distinct gap in the current London theatre scene. “London theatre distinctly lacked smaller, off-Broadway type theatres seating less than 500 people to develop shows prior to moving to the West End,” said Mackintosh. As well as the 312-seat main auditorium, the new facility also has a studio theatre seating 100 with a full broadcast TV facility (see image below), enabling shows to be transmitted across satellite and online TV services—an attribute which the promoters claim is unmatched by any other theatre in London. Food and beverage options include the first floor St James Brasserie, open for brunch, lunch and dinner, and the ground floor St James Bar. From 1835-1957 its historic namesake, the St James’s Theatre in King Street, regaled audiences with ballets, operas, magic shows and new plays. The new theatre aims to continue this diverse tradition, with an opening season that ranges from Sandi Toksvig’s dramatic Bully Boy to the uplifting new musical Daddy Long Legs by Paul Gordon.
