United Airlines has launched an online auction for Mileage Plus members to bid for parts of its B747 aircraft.

The carrier’s jumbo makes its final international flight between Seoul and San Francisco on October 29, although it will continue to operate domestically until November 7.

To commemorate the aircraft’s retirement, United is holding an auction for Mileage Plus members, with proceeds going to Air Camp, a non-profit organisation created to inspire future generations to pursue education and careers in aviation-related science, technology, engineering and maths.

The auction launched with four “buy now” items, although two (the livery panels and window cuts) have already sold out. The remaining lots in the first phase of the auction are:

  • Triple passenger seats – 250,000 miles
  • Double passenger seats – 275,00 miles

New items will then be added between October 30 and November 7, and will include standby airspeed indicators, tail number cuts, American flag cut-outs, brake and oxygen pressure indicators, and standby altimeters.

Commenting on the auction, Suzi Cabo, managing director of corporate and community affairs said:

“Since we announced the retirement of our 747 fleet, our customers and employees have been enthusiastic about sharing their fond memories of this beloved aircraft.

“We’re excited to provide MileagePlus members with the exclusive opportunity to keep a piece of the 747, all while paying it forward to the next generation of aviation leaders who attend Air Camp.”

In addition United will offer B747-themed amenities kits until January 2018, featuring B747 branded items and trading cards, with a total of 15 cards to collect in the series.
