Marriott has announced plans for its first W Hotels property in Italy, with the 159-room Rome hotel scheduled to open in 2021.

W Rome will be housed within two historic buildings in the city’s Via Veneto district, close to the popular Via Condotti with its fashion retailers and coffee shops.

The 19th century buildings had originally been intended for residential use, but have previously operated as a hotel and offices, and will now be “carefully renovated and re-imagined to refresh the historic elements, while infusing the W brand’s bold and inspiring design philosophy”.

Features will include a rooftop bar, the brand’s signature W Living Room lobby concept, FIT workout facility and spa, “two vibrant restaurants” and 120 sqm of meeting space.

Commenting on the news Carlton Ervin, chief development officer, Europe, Marriott International said:

“This latest signing shows that even in mature markets like Rome, W Hotels is fortunate to collaborate with visionary developers such as the Omnam Group who are equally passionate about creating an exciting and original hospitality experience.

“The choice of W Hotels for their prime development, reflects our shared confidence that the brand’s inimitable offer will be perfectly attuned to this spectacular city to meet the needs and desires of future travellers in the Italian capital.”

Marriott currently has ten W Hotel properties under development in Europe, with W Tel Aviv set to open early next year, followed by Madrid, Belgrade, and the Algarve in 2019, Prague and Budapest in 2020, and Rome, Marbella and Edinburgh in 2021.
