United Airlines has announced a new daily summer seasonal route between Edinburgh and Washington Dulles for 2018.
The first flight will depart Washington on May 23, with the route operating until the last flight from Edinburgh on October 4.
It’s the first time the US and Scottish capitals have been linked with direct, nonstop services.
Flight UA146 will leave Washington at 2210, landing into Edinburgh at 1025 the following day, with the return leg UA147 departing the Scottish capital at 1240, landing back into Washington at 1540.
The new service will add to the carrier’s existing summer seasonal flights between Edinburgh and Chicago, and the year-round route between the Scottish capital and New York Newark.
However United has confirmed that the Edinburgh-Newark route – which currently operates twice daily – will be reduced to daily for the period during which the seasonal Edinburgh-Washington route is in operation.
In other news, United is to add daily summer seasonal services from New York Newark to Porto and Reykjavik, and between Zurich and San Francisco.
The carrier will also extend the following summer transatlantic routes in 2018:
- Chicago-Edinburgh – will operate between May 4 and October 26
- San Francisco-Munich – will operate between May 4 and October 26
- Chicago-Dublin – will operate between April 9 and October 26
- Washington-Lisbon – will operate between April 9 and October 26
United recently announced new routes between LA and Singapore (launching October 27), and between Houston and Sydney (launching January 18), as well as the relaunch of summer flights between Denver and London Heathrow (starting March 25).
However the carrier will drop flights between New York and Birmingham in October, as well as its Shannon-New York service from November, and New York-Glasgow for the winter from October 29.
