W Hotels (now part of Marriott International since the recent merger with Starwood) has announced plans for its first property in Budapest.

The 162-room W Budapest will be housed with the renovated late-19th century Drechsler Palace, located opposite the State Opera House on Andrassy Avenue, the city’s main shopping, restaurant and entertainment street.

The hotel is scheduled to open in 2020, and will feature a restaurant and destination bar, three meeting and events spaces, a fitness centre, pool, spa facilities and the brand’s signature lobby concept the W Living Room.

Commenting on the news Anthony Ingham, Global Brand Leader, W Hotels Worldwide said:

“Budapest has secured a spot as epicenter of European travel with the convergence of creative communities combined with a thriving economy, making this city the perfect fit for the innovative edge of W Hotels.

“This vibrant city remixes historic tradition with a modern twist – the perfect backdrop to offer guests and locals alike a dynamic scene that shakes up the traditional and embraces the avant-garde.”

W Hotels currently operates 50 properties worldwide, with this figure set to reach 75 by 2020. The brand recently opened a property in Las Vegas, and announced plans for a hotel in the Algarve under its new W Escape portfolio.
