Dear Alex,

I have booked a Club World [business class] promotional fare to the Far East with British Airways, flying on a B747. I would like to sit on the upper deck and am willing to pay BA’s seat allocation fee. But when I look at the online “Manage my reservation” seat selection function, I see that all upper deck seats are already taken, while seats downstairs are still almost empty.

Joanne Kemp, London

Alex replies:

Rightly or wrongly, BA has a restrictive advance seat assignment policy. Because of its privacy, the B747’s upper deck is thought to be the best place to sit in Club World. That is why accommodation upstairs tends to be preassigned to Executive Club members who have certain seating preferences.

Other passengers, even if paying a fee, can only select lower deck seats. If they wish to sit upstairs, they must wait until online check-in opens.
