United Airlines will implement a tight ten-abreast seating configuration in economy class for 19 of its existing 74 B777 aircraft.
These 19 aircraft will be deployed on domestic routes, as the airline is gradually replacing the B777s currently serving long-haul international routes with its more fuel-efficient B787 Dreamliners.
Currently, the domestic B777s feature a 2-5-2 layout with 344 seats. The retrofit programme, which will begin in May, will result in a 3-4-3 seating configuration with overall capacity increased to 364.
Despite the tighter seating configuration in coach, United will be introducing a number of upgrades to its retrofitted B777s. In-seat power outlets will be offered, along with wifi capabilities, which will allow passengers to stream entertainment content to their personal devices.
In addition, the US carrier will be replacing its existing recliner seats in business class with a more comfortable flatbed product.
United has a backlog of 14 B777-300ERs on order. The airline has not revealed if the new deliveries will come with a nine-across or ten-across seating configuration.
