SilkAir, the regional subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, will begin direct services between Singapore and Darwin on March 26, 2012, making the flight the carrier’s first service into Australia.

The new service will be operated by Airbus A319 and Airbus A320 aircraft four times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Flights depart Singapore at 1930, arriving in Darwin at 0145, and the return leg departs Darwin at 0230, arriving back in the Lion City at 0530.

Currently, SilkAir’s presence in Australia is only because of routes served by Singapore Airlines. “This is a very significant move for us and will complement our parent company’s ongoing efforts to better serve the Australian market,” said Marvin Tan, chief executive of the carrier.

According to a SilkAir spokesperson, “Darwin is the leading gateway to the major mining and gas production regions in the Northern Territory and South Australia” making the city an important destination for business and cargo traffic.
