Qantas is set to trial onboard wifi internet access on six Airbus A380 aircraft from February next year and a new inflight entertainment service on a dedicated Boeing B767-300 aircraft.

The wifi internet service, provided by OnAir, will initially only be available in business and first class cabins on flights between Sydney and Los Angeles, and Melbourne and Los Angeles. Passengers will be able to connect to the internet via all wifi enabled gadgets, including tablets, laptops and phones and, according to a Qantas spokesperson, the service will be free during the trial.

In mid-January, the carrier will also pilot a scheme called Q Streaming, which allows passengers to stream more than 200 hours of Qantas' on demand inflight entertainment via their own wifi enabled devices, thus providing passengers with greater content choices. Eventually, "following the trial, Qantas will assess opportunities for the application of Q Streaming across both the domestic and international fleet," stated Qantas.

While the exact duration of the wifi and Q Streaming trials have yet to be confirmed, the Qantas spokesperson stated they will run for roughly six weeks.
