Qantas will retrofit six two-class Boeing B747s to include 40 Premium Economy seats. The aircraft with the new offering will be used on Tokyo services in October 2010 and on Frankfurt services from February 2011.
The product is currently available on Qantas flights to Bangkok, Hongkong, Singapore, Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Buenos Aires.
Alan Joyce, Qantas chief executive, said that Premium Economy's popularity, particularly with their leisure clientele, had encouraged the airline to roll it out on more routes.
On the ground, benefits include priority check in, additional baggage allowance and priority boarding and disembarkation, and in the air, perks include a nine-inch seat recline and up to 40-inch seat pitch; extra-wide 19.5-inch seats with ergonomic cushioning and adjustable headrest designed by Marc Newson and Recaro; in-arm touch-screen video monitor, Neil Perry-inspired menu with premium wines; and self-service bar offering a range of refreshments during the flight and pre-take off refreshments including champagne, orange juice and water.
Earlier this year, Qantas admitted it was considering changes to its B747s, although it declined to be specific (see news).
