Name your price at Singapore Ibis

5 Feb 2009

Singapore Ibis, due to open on February 12, deserves to take a bow for creative promotions.

It’s inviting guests to log onto their website, http://www.paywhatyouwant.com.sg/, and put the price they want to pay each day. Those, who make it during the “sale period”, get what they bid for. (A clock on the homepage indicates the hours “till the next promotion period”.)

The bidding campaign ends on March 15.

Hiro Inoue, Singapore Ibis marketing director, said that contrary to expectations no one had put in a S$1 (66 US cents) bid. In fact, the amounts coming in started from S$70 (US$46.30).

Singapore Ibis is located along Bencoolen Street, which was known more for backpacker-type lodgings. But as of late, the area has taken on a more upscale image.

The 538-room hotel, which offers free Wi-Fi and a coin-operated laundrette to all guests, belongs to the multi-brand Accor group.

Sluggish business has prompted other hotel chains to do their own thing, from free Wi-Fi in all properties as the Shangri-La has started doing to free breakfast for a certain like the Holiday Inn.
