Malaysia Airlines to join Oneworld alliance

Malaysia Airlines will join the oneworld airline alliance by 2012.

The decision was made at a meeting “on the side lines of IATA’s 2011 World Air Transport Summit,” stated a press release on the carrier’s website.

A formal membership agreement will be drawn up later this year and the carrier will become a member late next year.

As part of its preparations for the membership, the carrier will be developing “bilateral links” with other oneworld members.

The membership will offer benefits for the carrier's customers including access to the alliance’s wide network and the carrier’s Enrich frequent flyer members will be able to earn and redeem miles when flying with any of the other member carriers.

Great news for MH and OneWorld!

I knew this would come. After KL put more favour to help long lost sibling GA into SkyTeam, taking MH to the same alliance is a less likely step to be taken.
I'm just wondering the future partnership between MH and KL for their Australian destination (MH feeds all KL connection to cities in Australia and NZ) knowing QF itself is a proud oneWorld member...

Btw, MH and CX is a good combination: both have favourite Asian destinations as hubs, both have great cabin crew with great service.

P.S. with this announcement; will AY favour KUL to be their next Southeast Asian destination after SIN??? only time will tell...

Disappointing for SkyTeam. Now, there's no regional SEAsia service other than GA and VN. SkyTeam had the opportunity to have a SkyTrax 5-star airline in their portfolio.
