Jet Airways to suspend Delhi–Milan flights

20 Nov 2012
Jet Airways is suspending its service between Delhi and Milan Malpensa from February 1 next year due to the financial downturn in Europe. “In view of the ongoing global economic slowdown and in particular the current economic crisis in the Eurozone countries, Jet Airways has announced its decision to temporarily withdraw its Airbus A330 daily direct service between New Delhi and Milan,” a spokesperson for the airline said. “As part of the ongoing network rationalisation programme of the airline, one of the fiscal controlling measures adopted by management has been the withdrawal of loss-making routes and redeployment of those assets and capacities on other routes and destinations, where profitability will be better.” Jet Airways launched the flight in December 2010 when it said there was expanding bilateral trade between Italy and India in businesses including automotive, textiles, heavy engineering, infrastructure, energy, and clean technology. Last week, the airline also ended its five-year-old service between Chennai and the Belgian capital of Brussels, also citing the Eurozone crisis as the reason (see here). Other Asian airlines have also been cutting services to European cities. In October, Singapore Airlines stopped flying to the Greek capital of Athens due to the weak performance on the route (see here). In September, Hong Kong Airlines ended its service to London Gatwick because of the bleak economic outlook in Europe (see here). Jet Airways said it would work to ensure that affected passengers are rebooked on alternate Jet Airways flights or partner's flights. Nicholas Olczak
