Japan Airlines (JAL) and British Airways (BA) have expanded their codeshare agreement, making Europe more accessible to travellers from Japan.

With the expansion, JAL passengers can travel on BA-operated flights carrying the “JL” code to cities including Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, Berlin and Munich in Germany as well as other selected cities in Northern Europe.

Brussels and Geneva are new to JAL’s Europe network, while Athens makes a comeback after a 20-year absence.

Nine new codeshare routes will take effect from March 28. With flights to and from London, they include Dusseldorf, Munich, Berlin, Geneva, Basel, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo and Brussels.

On April 28, four additional codeshare routes will start operations: London-Prague-London, London-Athens-London, London-Madrid-London and London-Barcelona-London.

All these codeshare flights will be operated by BA and subject to government approval.

Once approved, the total number of codeshare flights between the two airlines will be 23, bringing JAL’s Europe network to 36 cities.
