Delta Air Lines plans to revitalise its fleet of Boeing B747-400 aircraft flying from Tokyo Narita.

Between the summer of 2011 and 2012, 16 B747s will receive the new fully flat-bed seats in the BusinessElite cabin, while the new Economy class seats will also be refreshed.

This is part of the carrier’s previously announced plan to invest more than US$1 billion in enhancing products and services throughout its network by 2013.

Delta's BusinessElite section on the B747 will consist of 48 lie flat beds seats in with direct aisle access for each seat. Window seats will face the window for improved privacy and centre seats will be angled toward each other to accommodate customers travelling together. These will measure 81.7 inches in length and 20.50 inches in width, similar to the flat-bed product currently offered on the B777-200LR fleet. Amenities include a 120-volt universal power outlet, personal LED reading lamp and a 15.4-inch personal video monitor.

Economy class likewise benefits with 338 seats featuring up to 1.5 inches more personal space and increased under-seat storage, adjustable headrests and the Panasonic Eco 9i Integrated Smart Monitors that use 30 percent less energy and are 60 percent lighter than the entertainment systems installed on other Delta aircraft. On the line up are over 200 movies, a variety of TV programmes, more than 4,000 digital music tracks, a suite of video games and a USB port to power personal devices.

Delta's 747s are deployed to trans-Pacific and intra-Asia flights to and from the Tokyo-Narita hub, including routes connecting Tokyo to Detroit, Honolulu, Manila, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York-JFK and Shanghai.

Of late, the carrier has been expanding fast in the region – see news for more details.
