AirAsia scraps counter check-in fee

AirAsia has decided to abolish the counter check-in fee for all its international flights throughout its network.
Passengers with bookings made for December 22 onwards will be exempt from the RM10 (US$3) counter check-in fee. However, customers on domestic flights will still have to pay the counter check-in fee or select one of the free self check-in options (kiosk, web, mobile).
The counter check-in fee for international flights was introduced by the airline in September this year, the same time it introduced its self check-in service (see story here). International passengers using self check-in options available via web, mobile or kiosks can do so for free
While the airline did not give a reason for the turnaround it is probably due to passenger complaints. AirAsia Group chief executive, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said, “This move is part of our continuous effort to reduce the cost of traveling for all our guests, especially with the recent hike of passenger service charge for international travellers. With the abolishment of counter check-in fees for international destinations, guests can now go directly to the check-in counters for check-in. We will also continue to improve and innovate our check-in services.”
