Air India intends to make the July 31 invitation deadline, set by Star Alliance (see story here), after delaying for four years.
The carrier stated on its website that it had already “complied with the Minimum Joining Requirements (MJR), which are mandatory for joining the alliance”.
The other major hurdle to joining the alliance is migrating under the single “AI” code after the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines. This, the carrier states, was completed on February 27, 2011.
Star Alliance chief executive, Jaan Albrecht, previously stated that if Air India did not meet this deadline the invitation to join the global alliance would be withdrawn. He said: “We will not extend this deadline anymore. One day there must be a final point.”
Joining the alliance will provide Air India passengers access to a greater network of 181 destinations and seamless connections with 27 carriers.
