Strategic Airlines to become low-cost Air Australia

3 Nov 2011

Australian carrier and charter company Strategic Airlines is set to enter a whole new chapter.

“Strategic Airlines will retire its name, red, white and blue brand and full-service business model commencing from November 15 to become Air Australia, a new international and domestic low-cost carrier,” the carrier announced in a statement.

Air Australia will be highlighting Australia’s culture by sporting a lime green livery “with a hint of gold and silver-grey representing gum-trees, koalas and grey kangaroos” alongside a “stylised logo.”

The rebranded carrier will continue to fly from Brisbane to destinations in Strategic’s network, including domestic and international ones such as Bali and Phuket, using a mixed fleet of one Airbus A330-200 and six A320s. It will launch flights to Honolulu in December as well as a domestic service between Brisbane and Melbourne. Eventually, Air Australia will expand its network as it “has also been granted rights to operate services between Australia and China and Australia and the USA”. Frequencies on existing routes will be increased.

The launch of Air Australia comes closely behind the launch of Singapore Airlines’ low-cost subsidiary, Scoot, reflecting growing demand for low-cost carriers in the Asia-Pacific region (see story here).
