The world’s hottest show – Expo 2010 Shanghai China – has just opened its doors. But before you rush to get in, it might be wise to remember some guidelines to help you make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

DO

• have a plan to navigate the show grounds which are enormous. Do your homework before going and study maps and travel information, which abound on the web or pick up from the wealth of print materials scattered around the city.

• avoid peak times such as today, May 1 and October 1 holidays, weekends and summer holidays. Peak hours are expected to be from 10am to 2pm.

• dress comfortably as summers in Shanghai are scorchers. Wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes. Bring along medicines you may require if you have a medical condition or be aware of the location of first-aid stations around the Expo Park. Sunglasses and folding umbrellas will come in handy.

• be aware that while you may want to see as many pavilions as you can in a day, the reality is you can only manage only about five to six of them.

• shuttle between the Pudong and Puxi sides by taking the Metro within the Expo Garden or take a cross-river bus or ferry

DON’T

• bring lighters, matches or knives into the Park. Some solid food, but not beverages, is allowed.

• litter (trash was seen littering the premises of some pavilions during the six-day Expo trial operation). Help maintain a clean and pleasant environment.

• eat in the pavilions

• forget there is a lot of street action taking place such as parades and performances. Programmes vary daily and the electronic bulletin boards will furnish the most updated events.

• rush to eat. The peak lunch hour starts about 11am, so it may be wise to tour a pavilion while everyone else is having their meal. The service should be better when dining during the off-peak period.
