Hotel check: M Hotel Singapore

30 Nov 2015 by Clement Huang

BACKGROUND

Having first been acquired by Millennium Hotels & Resorts (Millennium) in 1995, the property that would eventually become M Hotel Singapore began its life under Millennium’s management as Copthorne Harbour View. Following a S$40 million (US$28 million) renovation project that lasted two years, the tourist hotel was rebranded to its current identity in 2002, and is now firmly positioned as a four-star business hotel. M Hotel Singapore joins Millennium’s two other existing hotels in the Lion City – Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel Singapore and Studio M Hotel Singapore.

WHAT’S IT LIKE?

A modern, glass-clad building with a stylish and contemporary lobby area. One side houses the main reception area that is complemented by a comfortable seating area and attached Tea Bar, while the other end – clearly identified by a statue of an imposing bronze bull – features more seats as well as Café 2000.

WHERE IS IT?

Located on Anson Road, close to the intersection connecting towards Keppel Road, M Hotel Singapore is 200 yards from Tanjong Pagar MRT station, placing it one stop from popular business hub Raffles Place and the city’s downtown area. Much of the hotel’s clientele are business travellers working in the neighbouring banks including JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank and DBS. Connectivity for foreign travellers is also easy, as M Hotel Singapore is a 20-minute drive from Changi Airport.

ROOM FACILITIES

The 413 guestrooms are divided into six categories – Deluxe Room, Premier Room, Club Room, Club Room Premier, Suite Room and Suite Premier. I was accommodated in a Club Room Premier.  My room was tastefully furnished, although the wooden décor is beginning to show its age. It should be noted that M Hotel Singapore is in the midst of refurbishing its Deluxe Rooms, with the new design featuring a darker, more contemporary palette.

The Club Room Premier offered a solid range of amenities that business travellers would appreciate, including fast wifi access, WLAN port for wired connections, and a large and sturdy work desk with three power ports attached. An ironing board is also available in each room and this complements the standard M Club privilege of daily complimentary laundry/pressing for two pieces of clothing.

Light controls are conveniently located and it was refreshing to stay in a hotel that offered simple on/off switches that were easy to use and manage. The controls extended to the bedside tables, enabling me to easily turn off the lights while lying on the bed. A minor complaint is that there weren’t any power outlets at the bedside, which meant that all mobile charging had to be done on the worktable.

The bathroom came with a rain shower and a bathtub. The pressure of the rain shower was excellent and I appreciated being able to change the water temperature quickly.

EXECUTIVE CLUB

All Club and Suite guests are afforded entry to the M Club Lounge on level 28. This modest-sized space is well maintained and offers excellent views of the Singapore skyline. Private check-in and check-out facilities are provided at the lounge, as is a daily international buffet breakfast with a live egg station. The F&B quality was good, though my omelette was a little overcooked. Other club benefits include all-day refreshments, evening canapés, one-hour complimentary use of the attached meeting room, and late check-out at 3pm (subject to availability).

RESTAURANTS AND BARS

M Hotel Singapore is home to five F&B outlets, including Café 2000 for all-day dining, the Tea Bar in the lobby for high tea, which features its signature chicken pie, hotpot at The Buffet, and drinks at J Bar, where top local acts play. There is also a Japanese outlet at the hotel, Hokkaido Sushi Restaurant.

BUSINESS AND MEETING FACILITIES

There is more than 1,228 sqm of event space available at the hotel, including a ballroom that can accommodate up to 32 tables of ten in a banquet setting, along with nine conference/meeting rooms. A dedicated catering and events sales team is also offered.

LEISURE FACILITIES

A relatively small and cardio-heavy gym is open all day. There is also an outdoor pool, spa bath and five spa treatment suites. Golf, tennis, squash and other water sports activities can also be arranged on request. All recreational facilities are located on level 11.

VERDICT

A highly efficient and pleasant hotel that provides attractive business-friendly amenities for discerning travellers, M Hotel Singapore is well worth a look.
