Eagerly-awaited, long overdue and with the hopes of British Airways, BAA and the travelling public all resting on its elegantly curved roof, London Heathrow’s new terminal finally opens this month. Business Traveller provides a guided tour

You wait years for anything to change at Heathrow, and then it all happens in the space of a few days. On March 27, 2008 Terminal 5 will open, most British Airways flights will move over to the new terminal, and there will be a reorganisation of airlines among the remaining terminals. Then four days later, Open Skies begins, a development which will see yet more new services including Air France/KLM flying direct from Heathrow to Los Angeles. All good news then? Well, we hope so.

It is inevitable that there will be short-term disruption, a fact recognised by Heathrow’s owner BAA, as it has applied for dispensation from any financial penalties which normally would result from flight delays. Then we should bear in mind that not all BA flights are going over to Terminal 5 (see T5: The knock-on effect) and it’s a phased move in any case. And what’s this about passengers being bussed to their aircraft from the new terminal?

For those other airlines operating from Heathrow there will also be disruption as there is a scramble to convert lounges and sort out their own operations, made more complicated by the fact that Heathrow’s runways will be as constrained as ever (a new terminal doesn’t allow more plane movements, after all). It all adds up to a cautious welcome then, for Terminal 5, and one which by being so overdue, has perhaps unrealistic hopes pinned upon it.

In our T5 special we present information designed to make the transfer as painless as possible. Simply click on the links below to find out more.
