What's it like? This state-of-the-art business hotel, opened last August, cost E126 million and is within the historic Bavarian post office building. The beautiful façade, with its big stone blocks and grand columns, has been preserved well.

Where is it? The Sofitel adjoins the Hauptbahnhof (central station), an area being redeveloped and handy for the S-Bahn or Lufthansa bus to the airport.
It's 100 yards from the station's southern or Bayerstrasse exit. From the hotel you can walk into the heart of the pedestrianised old town in 10 to 15 minutes.

How many rooms? 396, including 57 suites. Rooms either overlook the surrounding streets or station.

Room facilities: Rooms are solidly built with effective insulation against noise. My room faced the station and I couldn't hear the trains but did hear announcements.
Wifi access is available in half the rooms (it's not possible in the rest because of the former Post Office's thick walls). Guests might object to some of the odd room fittings – it was a day before I realised the washbasin plug is activated by a lever on the bath. Also, you have to move the desk (it's on rollers) to draw the curtain. All rooms are furnished with Sofitel's new "MyBed".

Business centre: Open long hours with the usual work stations, printers, copiers and so on. There's wifi in all public areas.

Restaurants and bars: Main restaurant Schwarz & Weiz is open for lunch and dinner. It serves international cuisine with an Oriental influence. Suzie W is an informal Asian bistro open from 1100 to 2300. Isarbar is open 1000-0200.

Fitness centre: The centre features massage, sauna and solarium facilities.

Verdict: A great location for getting from the airport and travelling around town.

Prices: Weekday rooms cost as little as E135 online and rack rates E210. Weekend rates are E130. All prices are room only.
