Adelaide Airport has begun a month-long trial of a new Rohde & Schwarz Quick Personnel Security Scanner, as part of efforts to improve efficiency for passengers clearing the central security screening point.
Able to conduct a scan in a few seconds, the high-speed full-body scanner will operate in conjunction with Adelaide Airport’s existing four screening lanes. The trial is set to end on May 19.
According to the airport’s general manager Mark Young, the technology – which already exists across the UK and Europe – “will make for a more pleasant experience, particularly for customers with medical conditions or those with medical implants who might otherwise activate an alarm at the current ‘walk through’ metal detectors.”
Young added that passenger privacy and safety are maintained using the new scanner. “The system is considered very safe. The microwaves are of very low intensity, and several orders of magnitude below the signal level of mobile phones.
“If the scanner reports an alarm, the location of the object is marked on a generic graphic of the human body – with no identifying features – preserving the privacy of passengers.”
