SIA’s Krisflyer programme partners with Scoot and Tigerair

27 Jan 2015 by Clement Huang
The day is nearly here where members of Singapore Airlines’ (SIA) Krisflyer programme will be able to use their miles to earn and redeem points for flights on Scoot and Tigerair. Starting April 2015, Krisflyer members may redeem their miles for vouchers to travel with Scoot and Tigerair. Likewise, they may also use their points to purchase selected products offered by the LCCs. The two Singapore-based low-cost carriers (LCC) are wholly owned by Singapore Airlines, and this news is unsurprising given the growing industry trend that has seen LCCs partnering with full-service airlines. Qantas and Emirates for instance work closely with Jetstar, and members of the former’s Frequent Flyer or the latter’s Skywards programmes may also earn and burn points when travelling with the LCC. “Scoot and Tigerair are already important parts of the SIA Group’s portfolio of airlines,” said Lee Wen Fen, SIA’ senior vice president marketing planning. “Including them as Krisflyer partners is a natural development and will help us live up to our promise to constantly offer more benefits to our members.” On the flip side, the ability to earn miles from flights with Scoot and Tigerair is also in the works, and will be offered by the end of the year. While no details have been confirmed, it is highly likely that the earn rates from the LCC flights will be lower to that offered when travelling with SIA itself. In all likelihood, similar to how the purchase of discounted tickets with SIA would result in reduced accrual rates (i.e. fare classes N and Q only award 50 per cent of mileage), this may also hold true for Scoot and Tigerair. Given the significant price difference between an LCC and a full-service carrier, it would only be natural that the earning rates also reflect this.
