Melia aims to woo Chinese travellers with “Pengyou” welcome

25 Sep 2015 by BusinessTraveller
Melia Hotels International is stepping up its efforts to attract Chinese travellers to its properties, with the rollout of a welcome programme across 80 hotels in key markets. The Pengyou service (literally meaning “Friend”) comprises several initiatives including the presence of Mandarin-speaking hotel staff, the acceptance of China Union Pay cards, Chinese language TV channels, Chinese breakfast, translated promotional materials, and a tea station and cup noodles in the minibar. The programme has already been implemented across the group’s Asia Pacific properties, as well as three hotels in Madrid, Barcelona and Nassau Beach, with plans to extend it to 80 properties in key markets across Spain, Italy, France, Germany and the UK by next year. The group hopes the move will help it achieve the China Outbound Tourism Quality Service Certification at these “China-friendly” properties. Melia has doubled its portfolio of hotels in Asia-Pacific in the last couple of years, with 15 new properties set to open in China alone by 2017. The group recently opened its first Innside property in the UK (see news May 12), and has also announced new Me by Melia hotels in Milan and Barcelona. melia.com Mark Caswell
